What is psychotherapy?

Psychotherapy is a step taken towards becoming a healthy adult. In this case, psychotherapist and the patient try to solve the existing problems through therapeutic conversations.

The main purpose of psychotherapy is to discover the roots of existing problems and enabling the patient with sufficient support so that s/he can take independent decisions and actions for one's life. 

 Throughout the process, psychotherapist supports the patient in mental and psychologic ways. 

Therapy also tries to enable the individual; 

-  to examine and question the existing thoughts and assumptions,

- to evaluate the reality,

- to confront the worrisome experiences,

-to understand the difficulties one comes across in life,

- to change the negative conversations one has on own,

- to develop a new and more adaptive life story, 

- to find one's own way,

-to realize own emotional needs,

- to increase awareness, 

-to pluck up the courage one needs for the decisions one will take,

- to allow all kinds of emotions,

-to strengthen the emotional abilities

by creating an individual experience aiming growth. 

Psychotherapists are not professionals who tell one what to do or what not to do, rather they help individuals to find one's own way by becoming a fellow throughout the journey. Therefore, the boundaries and the relationship between the therapist and the patients are quite significant throughout the process. 
Applied techniques and given decisions should be approved by the patient. Any technique that is not suitable or appropriate for the patient would neither be efficient nor sustainable. 

Throughout the process, the patient is responsible as much as the therapist is. Therapists might sign some homework or recommend some exercises. These are important since they lead one to get to know one's own and understand what s/he is capable of, likes or dislikes. So, one can learn to steer his/her own life after the therapy as well. 

Every individual is different, so their story is. Therefore, even if many therapy approaches apply similar techniques; every therapy process and every therapy session would be unique. 

The duration for therapy, applied techniques, given exercises and received consequence will differ from one to another.

 

Orientations Used by Beyza on Individual Therapy

-Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (mastered during master education at the University of Utrecht).


-Schema Therapy (Worked on a research internship project at the University of Amsterdam and received certified training by ISST).


-Mindfulness (Learned through the courses and seminars at the University of Utrecht).


-Mindful Self-Compassion (Received training by Dr. Kristen Neff and Dr. Chrsitopher Germer, she uses this technique as a supportive tool in psychotherapy.
